In its report on April 11, 2012, the USGS (the United States Geological Survey) released earthquakes that occurred in the world since 1900. Of the seventeen most devastating earthquakes, five of them occurred in Indonesia’s political territory which is located on the Pacific Ring of Fire. When a devastating tsunami followed a tectonic earthquake occurred in December 2004 that hit Aceh, the term “tsunami” was a new vocabulary for the Indonesian public because it had never before happened. Likewise, when a devastating earthquake struck Palu recently, “liquefaction” was also a new vocabulary that we had not yet known.
Indonesia thus faces two major problems. First, with the advancement of seismic science, Indonesian engineers now know several regions as disaster-prone areas. For this reason, planners and engineers can prepare accurate zoning followed by strict regulations to prevent authorities to convert such areas into residential areas. Second, because of the lack of mastery of seismic science and technology in the past, it is possible that in the region which is actually a disaster-prone area it has now developed into a residential area. Modern humans always look for solutions to overcome their weaknesses in the past. That is why Indonesian engineers need to think of construction technology innovations to strengthen infrastructure buildings in areas that are already built but are prone to such disasters.
INTAKINDO is home to around 17,000 Professional Engineers from various disciplines who need to think of solutions to the two aforementioned big problems. In the first Annual Scientific Meeting (PIT) on March 20-21 2019, INTAKINDO will convene a meeting of regional planners and construction experts who are coming from universities and research centers and field practitioners to share experiences and knowledge. Our coming PIT has the theme: Construction Technology Innovation in Infrastructure Planning and Strengthening in Disaster-Prone Areas.
Who should attend?
Regional planners, construction experts, researchers from universities and research centers, and professional engineers as construction and project executors will attend INTAKINDO’s PIT-1. This will be an arena for sharing experiences and knowledge between the two who are spread in various engineering schools and engineering practitioners throughout Indonesia and abroad.
Time and place Time: March 20-21 2019 Place: ndonesia Convention Exhibition (ICE BSD)
The form of scientific meeting
With a population of 261 million, the fourth largest in the world, Indonesia has a very low number of scientific publications. According to the SJR (Scimago Journal & Country Rank), Indonesia only ranks 52, far below Singapore (ranked 32, population 5.6 million), Malaysia (ranked 34, population 32 million), and Thailand (ranked 42, total population 69 million). The government has been working hard to boost Indonesia’s rank in this scientific publication by granting various incentives not only to researchers on campus but also to engineering practitioners such as INTAKINDO members. Publications and scientific work have now become a requirement for professional engineers who want to upgrade their level of expertise to a higher level.
In order to support the government program to increase the ranking of Indonesian scientific publications, we are going to groups the INTAKINDO’s PIT-1 into two conferences, namely international and national conferences. The national meeting is intended for young experts who are pioneering careers to pursue a higher level. For this meeting, participants can write their articles in Indonesian. While international meetings are for senior experts. Participants must submit their manuscript in English for this group. Designated experts in relevant fields will blindly review all articles for both conferences, and INTAKINDO will be publish selected articles in proceedings. The difference is, Scopus, an international indexing agency, will index articles in the international conference. INTAKINDO will provide a maximum of one hundred papers for Scopus’ indexed articles.
